Logline
During Oscar night, a suicidal lifeline counselor and a Russian escort on the run for her life form an uneasy alliance as they seek refuge in his Hollywood apartment, fighting not to get murdered and not to fall in love
Synopsis
Twenty years after a mysterious and brutal experiment in a secret Russian laboratory transforms a young boy named Misha into something more than human, the consequences of that experiment reach Los Angeles.
Misha, now a powerful and volatile crime figure with animal-like instincts and supernatural abilities, rules a violent network of Russian criminals operating out of Hollywood. His obsessive love for Marina—his beautiful but increasingly disillusioned girlfriend—keeps her trapped in his dangerous world. When Marina discovers a notebook containing the secrets behind Misha’s origin, along with valuable contraband that could destroy him, she steals the evidence and attempts to escape.
Fleeing for her life, Marina becomes trapped inside a sprawling Hollywood apartment complex while Misha and his ruthless associates hunt for her. In desperation, she breaks into the apartment of Jack Irby, a struggling, eccentric screenwriter preparing for a lonely Oscar night. Jack’s life is already unraveling—his career has stalled, his girlfriend has left him, and his confidence is shattered. Marina initially holds him hostage at gunpoint to hide from her pursuers.
As the night unfolds, the two unlikely strangers form a tense and often darkly comic alliance. While Misha tightens his search across the building, Jack and Marina begin to reveal their deepest fears, failures, and hopes. Jack slowly realizes that Marina’s situation is the real-life thriller he has been unable to write, while Marina struggles between her lingering feelings for Misha and her desperate desire for freedom.
With Misha closing in and the truth about his terrifying abilities emerging, Jack and Marina must decide whether to run, confront the past, or risk everything to break free from the violent world that has followed them to Hollywood.
South of Sunset is a darkly comic thriller about obsession, identity, and redemption—set against the surreal backdrop of Hollywood on Oscar night.
